How to choose the perfect pillow

To rest well, you need to choose the perfect pillow, and to do so, there are many 'rules' to consider. The position you sleep in, the best material, your height – everything can affect the choice of pillow. In this article, we will show you how to make a conscious decision.

Let's consider sleeping positions

  • Back sleepers: The pillow should support the curvature of the neck while adequately supporting the neck and shoulders. A pillow with medium thickness (12-13 cm) is recommended. It should be soft, made of foam, with a rectangular or anatomical shape.
  • Side sleepers: The pillow should support the head and neck to keep the spine in a horizontal and natural position. A high pillow (15 cm) is perfect. Choose an anatomical latex shape or foam – the right compromise between stiffness and ergonomics.
  • Stomach sleepers: It is better not to use a pillow in this case. If needed, the pillow should be soft and low (10 cm) to avoid raising the head too much. The texture should be soft, filled with feathers or synthetic material.
  • Those who toss and turn: Whether the pillow is soft or hard does not matter; medium thickness and latex or foam as material are recommended.
  • Those with neck pain: Pillows designed for neck pain are ideal. If not available and the inflammation is not severe, the anatomical shape is suitable for relaxing muscles and aligning the spine.
  • Children: If very young, the pillow should be avoided to prevent the risk of suffocation. For older children (18 months and older), a low pillow (10 cm) is recommended.

Types of padding

Feather and down

Usually from geese or ducks, they create a soft pillow that does not offer  much support, making it ideal for belly sleepers. The softness and flexibility of these pillows allow them to comfortably conform to the curves of the body, providing an enveloping feel. Not recommended for allergy sufferers and children.

Natural fiber

Natural fibers offer a variety of feels to the padding. Cotton, breathable and lightweight, is ideal for those seeking softer pillows. Hemp, with excellent antibacterial properties, is known for its resilience, making it a suitable choice for those desiring a firmer padding. Bamboo possesses good thermoregulatory capabilities and antibacterial, anti-mite properties.

Foam

In this category, the most popular option is memory foam, which retains its shape for a 30-60 seconds. It is ideal for individuals who move during sleep, sleep on their side or back, and those with a sturdy build.

Hypoallergenic fiber

Essential for allergy sufferers is to have a pillow with hypoallergenic padding, that is, a pillow that does not accumulate dust and dust mites, thus allowing them to sleep soundly. There are many types of pillows made of fibers with hypoallergenic properties, but the following two proposals are designed entirely to ensure comfort for allergy sufferers, both in terms of padding and lining.
