Before storing a duvet in the closet, it's essential to thoroughly wash it following the correct procedures.

  • Avoid taking the goose duvet to the dry cleaners for dry cleaning, as this process can damage the delicate natural filling materials over time.
  • You can safely wash goose duvet in your washing machine. First, check the label on the garment to ensure its weight is compatible with the maximum capacity of the washing machine.
  • Use a washing machine program specifically designed for duvets or opt for a delicate or cold cycle. Ensure the water temperature does not exceed 30/40°C and select a gentle spin program.
  • Avoid using harsh detergents or excessive fabric softener, as these may harm the inner down. Additionally, refrain from using chlorine-based bleaches.
  • Hand-washing goose duvet is not recommended, as it increases the weight of the material, making it difficult to rinse and wring out effectively.

Step 2: Drying

At the end of the wash cycle, it's common to find the feathers clumped and balled up, which is entirely normal.

  • If using a dryer, select low temperatures and gentle cycles.
  • If a dryer isn't available, lay your goose down flat, taking care to avoid direct exposure to heat sources such as radiators or direct sunlight.
  • Spread the duvet out by holding it wide open to allow both the fabric and feathers to breathe.
  • Once dry, gently fluff the duvet to redistribute the feathers inside.

Step 3: Storage

Now, it's time to store your duvet in the closet. Pay attention to these points to ensure easy and proper storage:

  • Avoid using a vacuum bags for storage, as compressing duvets with a vacuum can cause flaking.
  • Utilize specially made cotton bags for storage. Often, duvets are sold with their own bags, which you can conveniently use for storage.
  • Be mindful of moisture, as it is the primary enemy of down filling. Ensure the storage area is dry to prevent any damage to the duvet.
